Frequently Asked Questions
Chess
Guests should know the rules of chess. For example, how the pieces move and how to castle and checkmate. They should also have genuine interest in the game, because the whole experience is based around chess with games incorporated into every day. Every participant should be clear that the main reason they are coming is for the chess. Beyond that, this retreat is for players of all levels. Everyone gets the same warm welcome and the same treatment from our expert hosts.
Completely normal, and it fades fast. Games are paired by level throughout the week, so you're never sitting across from someone wildly out of your depth. Nobody's watching to see who's the strongest player in the room.
Both. Coaching is informal and happens right after each game, with attention from both our Chess Host and the Grandmaster throughout the week. Alongside that, several mornings and evenings feature a group talk, either reviewing the best moments from the previous day's games or a session on chess history and ideas, open to everyone.
Yes. Once your game finishes, both the Chess Host and the Grandmaster are there to work through it with you, whether it's a position that gave you trouble or a game you'd like a second pair of eyes on.
No. All chess sets, boards, and clocks needed for games and coaching are provided at the chateau. You're welcome to bring your own for personal use, but it isn't required.
With 20 guests set to take part, you can expect that there will be others around the same level as you. We ask for your chess rating or playing level when you book specifically so we can shape fair, well-matched pairings, not so we can rank you. Guests are grouped by strength for most of the week, and the format naturally sorts itself as the event goes on: play well and you move up to meet stronger opposition, and the same applies in the other direction, so nobody's stuck in a mismatch for long. Nobody arrives or leaves feeling like the chess week wasn't right for their level.
Not at all, in fact most guests will be doing this. There's no need to arrive with anyone in particular. You'll play a different guest most rounds, share meals and evenings with the whole group, and you'll leave with plenty of new chess friends.
Every guest gets meaningful attention from both the Grandmaster and Chess Host across the week, though with a full group, we can't promise a full individual analysis of every game. Expect a mix of group sessions, where the best moments from the day are reviewed together, and rotating one-on-one time. Our team will make sure that every guest gets their fair share of attention from our chess experts throughout the week.
